Proper Regard for Important Things

According to the Bible, Esau was considered a profane man because he despised his birthright (Hebrews 12:16). The term “profane” refers to someone who doesn’t have a proper regard for important things. Later, when Jacob tricked their father into giving him the blessing that rightfully belonged to the firstborn, Esau was willing to accept the inheritance (Genesis 27). This shows that he didn’t take the matter seriously, prior (Genesis 25). Even though the birthright would have made Esau the head of the tribe and entitled him to a larger share of his father’s wealth, he treated it with little respect. Jacob didn’t act righteously either because he should have been willing to feed a hungry brother. Nevertheless, regarding the birthright itself, Jacob valued it much more than Esau did.

29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary.

30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.

31 But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.”

32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?”

33 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.

34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

~ Genesis 24:29-34

Holy God in heaven. I want to express gratitude for everything You have provided for my family, though I have not always shown my appreciation. Our world is full of distractions, and it is easy to be sidetracked by frivolous things. I, too, sometimes struggle with being slow to recognize and address important concerns. However, I understand that Your values, such as truth and righteousness, require careful consideration and discipline on my part. Therefore, I resolve to move forward with a clearer mind and a hardworking spirit. Please grant me the necessary wisdom to grow in properly regarding important things! Help me in this way, Father, to be more like You and Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
